New for the 2025-2026 school year, we are excited to introduce a musical theatre class for students in grades 9 to12. This class will focus on collaborative efforts to create a large scale musical performance in the spring, enhancing teamwork and creative skills.
Students can also seek leadership opportunities through out directing classes, fostering a supportive environment for aspiring leaders in the arts.
As featured in the Learn, Share and Grow Blog, we are incredibly fortunate to have this program. Join us to make lasting friendships and find your home at Sutherland!
Music Programs
The Sutherland Band Program offers students the opportunity to grow as musicians through both Concert Band and Jazz Band ensembles. Students develop their skills in performance, musicianship, teamwork, and artistic expression while contributing to a vibrant and supportive music community.
Each year, the program aims to participate in at least one major trip or music festival, giving students the chance to perform for professional adjudicators, collaborate with clinicians, and connect with fellow young musicians. These experiences allow students to refine their craft, gain confidence, and create lasting memories.
In 2025, for example, the Senior Concert Band travelled to Whistler to represent Sutherland at the Con Brio Music Festival, joining over 1,800 musicians from more than 40 schools. Students worked with renowned educators, including Dr. Michael Burch-Pesses from Pacific University and Dr. Gerald King from the University of Victoria, gaining valuable insight and elevating their performance. Their focused, heartfelt playing earned them pride and recognition as they returned home with new skills and unforgettable experiences.
The Sutherland band program continues to foster a sense of pride, passion, and belonging—helping students grow not only as musicians, but as leaders and collaborators.

Visual Arts
The Visual Arts Program at Sutherland Secondary is rooted in creativity, collaboration, and authentic hands‑on learning. Each year, students participate in a range of cross‑curricular and community‑focused projects that showcase both artistic skill and innovative thinking. The projects below represent just a small portion of the rich and varied work happening in our program.
During the 2024–2025 school year, students took part in two major initiatives: The Global Tea & Food Experience, a collaboration between Foods 9 and Art 9 that combined cultural research, culinary arts, and hand‑crafted ceramic tea sets; and the Slip Cast Enrichment Program, where senior art students worked alongside professional industrial designer Diane Espiritu to design, prototype, and slip‑cast ceramic vessels inspired by natural forms.
In the 2025–2026 school year, our senior classes created the Sutherland Winter Installation, a large‑scale collaborative project that transformed Santa’s Breakfast into an immersive artistic experience through hand‑built trees, a detailed winter backdrop, a cardboard steam train, and 3D sculptural snowflakes.
Together, these projects highlight the strength of our Visual Arts Program: meaningful collaboration, creative exploration, professional‑level practice, and impactful contributions to the school community.
